Health and Safety a speciality
Our main areas of work are Health and Safety training and consultancy. This includes general Health & Safety for a wide range of activities. We also provide specialist laser safety and Laser Protection Adviser (LPA) services for the medical, dental and cosmetic clinics. In addition our sister company, Lucid Optical Services Ltd, provides specialist technical training in the lasers, photonics and communications cabling fields.
Health & Safety - it's about you and those around you
Our principle at Lucid is that you should be implementing health and safety in order to enhance life for you, your colleagues, clients and the public. Properly implemented health and safety policies and procedures can be an asset to a business and not a hindrance. Of course the law insists managers consider health and safety, but just because it is a legal requirement it does not need to become an obstacle to efficient business. At Lucid we believe our expert safety advisers can help you implement efficient health and safety policies, processes and procedures so that your business benefits and is moved forward by Health and Safety rather than being held back.
Our philosophy is that health and safety is for everyone. You, your colleagues and the public. Health is a most valuable commodity that we value most when we do not posses it. By paying attention to our health and safety, we are healthier, fitter and able to achieve more and not less. Wherever there has been a serious accident or health has been compromised, there was a better way to do things that would ultimately have saved time and money whilst better protecting health and safety.

Putting the Health in 'Health & Safety'
For many people the words 'Health and Safety' immediately conjur images of accidents and acute injuries being avoided, but the 'Health' aspect of Health and Safety means that the subject has a much wider scope. This means that businesses must not just concentrate in those aspects of the work likely to cause injuries, but must also ensure working practices safe-guard the health of the employee both now and so far as is feasible later in life.
This means that all businesses must consider everyday things that employees do and assess whether they could, or are likely, to result in any injuries or health issues in the future.
"Any idiot can face a crisis, it's the day to day living that wears you out" - Anton Chekhov.
Examples of longer term exposure problems that have resulted in health issues for workers include: asbestos inhalation; vibration 'white finger'; and more recently repetitive strain injury (RSI). Additional health issues can arise through the emotional well-being of employees with stress, self esteem and bullying being possible workplace issues.
"Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." - Heave.
Although there is likely to be a short-term cost to addressing Health and Safety issues, we believe that properly addressed, with health included, there are commercial benefits for your business. A happy, healthy workforce is a more loyal and productive workforce.
Medical & Cosmetic Laser & Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments
Organisations offering medical or cosmetic treatments using laser or intense pulsed light (IPL) sources or systems, are a special case for laser safety in that these devices must clearly be hazardous in that they must have an effect on biological tissue (skin, eyes or other tissue). A result is that the Healthcare Commission require clinics using such lasers and IPL devices to be registered with them, and as part of the requirements for successful registration clinics must have an appointed and suitable qualified Laser Protection Advisor (LPA). For more information on clinic, surgery or salon registration with the Healthcare Commission please follow this link.
Laser Protection Advisor (LPA) services
Lucid provide Laser Protection Advisor (LPA) services to medical, dental and cosmetic clinics in the UK. It is important to note that an LPA needs to be appointed even if your clinic only has Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment systems rather than laser based systems. In England all such clinics must register with the Healthcare Commission, and in Wales with the Care Standards Inspectorate. Besides fulfilling the role of certificated LPA support, Lucid will help you with all aspects of the registration process for your clinic, including providing you with the comprehensive set of Policies and Procedures that you will need in order to successfully complete the registration process.
Health and Safety Consultants & Consultancy
At Lucid we hate to call ourselves 'consultants'. This is simply because of the reputation consultants have for costing the earth and adding little or no value. Indeed there are consultants in the health and safety industry who seem to feel it is their role to place obstacles in the way of the work being conducted by your business, rather than look for ways work can be done both safely and efficiently.
At Lucid we prefer to train staff to understand the principles and every day practice of working safely. Depending on your requirements and those of your business, we can train staff so consultants are not required, or we can help with risk assessments, auditing, developing procedures, policies and basically taking over the administrative burden of managing health and safety in the workplace.
Contact us, with no obligations and no hard-sell guaranteed, and we'll see if our consultancy services can help you save time and money. See more about our consultancy.
Training by health and safety experts
This is important. We have encountered trainers and training materials that are misleading or wrong. Sometimes the mistakes are minor and sometimes major, but if you are paying for training you have a right to expect an expert trainer who understands the subject, and can explain and answer questions correctly. At Lucid we do this, and our trainers are suitably qualified in their fields.
How is Lucid's Health & Safety Training Better?
The purpose of health and safety training should not just be to tick a box. It should really be about improving health and safety for those on the course, the people they work with and the public. With legal requirements and other pressures to demonstrate workers have received health and safety training, it is easy for some trainers to 'go through the motions' without engaging the trainees. If the trainees are not engaged by the training, then they are likely to learn little and change their behaviour even less.
At Lucid we believe in making health and safety training interesting, enjoyable and relevant. Our courses are delivered by expert and enthusiastic trainers who engage with the trainees. We believe this is the most effective way to encourage trainees to learn and adapt their behaviour to be more health and safety orientated.
Health & Safety Awareness, Knowledge, Qualifications and Behaviour
With health and safety there are several requirements that must come together to achieve the ideal working environment free of significant hazards and risks to health. Of these, arguably the most difficult to change is behaviour. People who are aware of and understand hazards regularly have accidents or endanger their health when old habits prove hard to resist.
At Lucid we can raise awareness, teach to a high level of knowledge on health and safety issues and train people to achieve health and safety qualifications. We will also influence their behaviour and we hope improve their working habits. Some will change their behavious for good, whilst others may need more regular refresher training to ensure they begin to work more safely and with regard for their health.
Health and Safety Behaviour Culture
For many, behavious and bad habits are so ingrained that it will take a sustained effort to change. In these circumstances the whole organisation may be mobilised to produce a culture of encouraging safe and healthy working practices and habits. At Lucid we can advise on such techniques to encourage an appropriate culture and we can provide the training required to launch such an initiative.
The right initiatives can produce not only an appropriate health and safety culture, but also motivational and team building results. If this sounds too good to be true, contact us and find out more.
Health and Safety - a dry subject or loyalty and team building exercise?
The first reaction of many to the subject of health and safety is that it is a dry topic especially to be trained in. This need not be the case, and it is possible for the right health and safety culture within an organisation to breed a shared responsibility for each other. This can bring colleagues closer together in a similar way to that in which family members feel responsibility to each other.
Ironically some team-building exercises and courses can be counter-productive when any members of the organisation are not included and there can result an 'us and them' which is certainly not the case with health and safety training!

For Your Amusement: when is life most dangerous?
It is often said by medical professionals that the first five minutes of life are the most dangerous. Contrary to this we believe that it is generally proven that the last five minutes of life are the most dangerous!
Only when the former and the latter coincide is the first statement true and yet invariably the latter is always true.
This is obviously 'tongue in cheek', but it illustrates the difficulties that even highly trained people can have in differentiating between hazards, risks, danger and statistical evidence and the way it is stated. A good understanding is key to producing appropriate risk assessments and procedures. At Lucid we are happy to help with this as health and safety consultancy work, hopefully reducing the numbers of workers whose last five minutes occur in the work place.
Origins of Lucid Training - Health and Safety Training and Consultancy
Lucid Training Ltd is a sister company to Lucid Optical Services Ltd, a specialist communications, fibre optics and technical training business. Lucid Optical Services developed very successful Laser Safety training courses and got drawn more into health and safety, and risk assessment training and consultancy services. With further developments in Laser safety software and LED and extended source (lamp) safety training courses, it was decided that a new business covering a wider range of Health and Safety fields would be appropriate, and hence Lucid Training Ltd was formed and health and safety experts with a wide range of in-depth knowledge and expertise were recruited.
