We could have chosen any one of thousands of quotations that poke fun at consultants, or at least an element of them who are well characterised for being full of their own importance whilst the client comes second. A typical consultancy arrangement would start with a review and audit of existing systems, policies and procedures (where in place), site safety audit and discussions with staff. This enables a formal assessment of the existing state of the safety management system which is fully reported to the senior management team. Development of an improvement strategy (a SHIP - Safety and Health Improvement Plan) takes place with full involvement of the senior management team as well as staff side representation to ensure full company involvement. Teams can then be instructed if necessary to begin the development of specific improvements, with ongoing evaluation and task review to ensure regulatory compliance and best practice involved at each stage.

Following the implementation of the initial safety controls, further work normally develops worker involvement with a strong emphasis on behavioural safety techniques and personal safety responsibility (often called ‘SOD IT’ – standing for See it, Own it and Do something about IT!!) On-going reviews are usually undertaken with a formal annual safety audit ensuring longer term improvements are taken to the core of the undertaking producint permanent positive safety cultural change. Email and phone contact is provided during business hours for ongoing issues and challenges.

Training can also be provided, with each course tailored to individual client requirements and based on client issues rather than an ‘off the peg’ course aimed at just anybody. Courses have been run in a very wide range of topics from risk management, work at height, asbestos awareness, manual handling to Electrical Competency, City and Guilds 17th Edition Wiring Regulations and Laser Safety.
