IOSH Health & Safety Training Courses

IOSH Working Safely & inspirational training sloganAs IOSH (Institute of Occupational Safety and Health) approved trainers we offer two of the most popular and well respected health and safety training courses available. These are the IOSH 'Working Safely' course and the IOSH 'Managing Safely' award and training course. These safety training courses lead to respected IOSH health and safety qualifications that are regarded as the industry standard.

IOSH Working Safely Training Course & Qualification

This is a 1-day health and safety training course designed as a general course applicable to workers and staff in all industries and work sectors. The training course covers all of the health and safety basics plus environmental issues. Assessment is via written and practical tests included in the day's training, with proof of learning achievement through either an IOSH certificate or credit card-sized working safely 'passport' card.

This is a hugely successful course that has been recently revised by IOSH to bring it bang up to date. Delegates get the IOSH work book to accompany the training course and take away for reference afterwards, and can choose between the IOSH certificate or a 'Safety Passport' card to prove their 'working safely' achievement. For a small additional fee trainees can choose to have both a certificate and a 'working safely' IOSH 'Safety Passport' card.

This is a significantly higher level course than the 'working safely' course, as is reflected in the 5-day duration of this training course. Trainees for this health and safety course are likely to be managers, safety representatives or executives with some responsibility for implementing health and safety requirements, policies and procedures within the workplace. Whilst previous experience, knowledge of health and safety or attendance of a safety training course is advantageous, it is not a requirement.

We have found that the best format for this training course is to spread the 5-days into three blocks of 2 days of training one week, 2 days the week after and the a final training assessment day within a week or so of that. This event structure allows for trainees to implement and bring back to the training session experience of the health and safety issues they have in their business. It also allows more time for the additional exercises and health and safety project work, some of which is completed outside the training days.

At times it will be possible to run the course as a straight 5-day event, but whilst this can save some travel time in certain cases, many prefer the format that provides more time to digest, implement and feedback. Additionally it does not require long periods away from the office.

If you are interested in other Health and Safety training courses certified by IOSH or an alternative examination provider or awarding body please contact us for further information.

Whilst IOSH is our preferred awarding body for their two industry leading training courses of Working Safely and Managing Safely, there are other options. For people working in the catering industry the CIEH hygiene training courses and qualifications are well known, and Lucid are also able to offer various City and Guilds health and safety qualifications as we are an approved City and Guilds training and examination centre.

This said, we find the IOSH 1-day Working Safely award is ideal as a training course for all staff to encourage safe working practices and a health and safety culture, whilst the longer IOSH Managing Safely training course and award is ideal for managers, safety representatives and those requiring a more in-depth appreciation of Health and Safety practices.

The top 3 facts about IOSH:

Clearly people who are serious about health and safety should consider IOSH training and qualifications.

IOSH Health & Safety Training at Lucid

"If I can get the same IOSH award from another provider, why should I choose Lucid?"

This is an obvious question, and yet it is asked by the same people who study school league tables before selecting their first choice for their children's education. The reason is simply that even if the award certificate is the same and the course topics are the same, the trainer is not and the support is not.

Three key reasons to use Lucid are:

These factors mean that together with very competitive pricing we believe we are the best value for money solution to your health and safety training needs, including IOSH certified awards.

Safety hard-hat and notebookValue for Money Health and Safety Training

At Lucid we try very hard to offer the best quality training at competitive prices, and we believe this results in the best value for money health and safety training available. We also believe this is true of our IOSH training courses despite the fact the course materials are developed by IOSH and available to other providers too. This is because we believe the quality of the training is largely determined by the knowledge, ability and attitude of the trainer.

Offering the best value for money IOSH training courses does not mean that we are always the cheapest IOSH approved training provider, but John Ruskin wrote in the 19th century of the dangers associated with choosing a supplier based on price:

"There is hardly anything in the world that someone cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price alone are that person's lawful prey.

It is unwise to pay too much, but it is also unwise to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money, that is all. When you paytoo little, you sometimes lose everything because the thing you bought is incapable of doing the thing you bought it to do.

The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot.... it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder it is well to add something for the risk you run. And if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better." - John Ruskin (1819-1900)

Our own experience has taught us that John Ruskin was very astute in these observations. He also believed that the best work was achieved by healthy, happy workers. For more on Ruskin, who loved the Lake District and retired there in 1884, see www.ruskinmuseum.com, or visit the museum in Coniston, Cumbria.

If you don't have time to follow the above link or visit the museum, please consider his advice when purchasing products, services or IOSH health and safety training courses.

"...beyond the scope of this course"

This is an off-putting phrase that we believe has no place in a health and safety training course when questions regarding health and safety should be encouraged.

OK, there are times when questions can eat up time and take the course off at a tangent, but Lucid trainers will normally ask if the question is appropriate or important to others in the group, and if not, will suggest answering it at a break time. Where a question is important to the whole group it can be covered for the group, and Lucid trainers will, and often do, stay later to answer your questions.

Above all you'll find Lucid trainers friendly and honest. We're here to help and we enjoy being helpful.
